She saw a butterfly fluttering around, its pretty blue wings beating back and forth. She saw a pink flower swaying to and fro in the icy wind, braving its first snowfall. Its fellow flowers had withered away, but the pink flower, with tiny frozen beads around its delicate petals, would remain resilient. She saw two black holes orbiting around each other, and when they collided, the force of the impact warped time itself. She heard the spirits whisper blessings to the king huddled in the cave. She witnessed the death of a Sun. The event was powerful, beautiful, and devastating, and took countless lives. Tinya was one of them. She saw the tallest building on Terra crumble to pieces, and then reconstruct back up in reverse. She saw the ancestors of the victims of that tragedy, who would never know that this would happen to their great-great-grandchildren. She saw an Egyptian Pharaoh wailing to Sokar and Anubis. She saw the famous Tau-Cetian revolutionary…
I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of ideas.
…and the sniper aiming his laser weapon at him from the 20th floor window.
I’ve seen people kill in the name of them, and die defending them.
She saw the mother of the sniper back when she was pregnant with him, cradling her round belly. The mother removed her headphones and placed them over her belly. “Here son, listen to this song I love.” She saw two young stowaways talking to each other on a 19th century train, wondering what the future would be like. One of them became the President. She saw the inside of a cell being infected by a virus. She saw through the eyes of a 20th century Terran inmate take his last shaky steps towards the electric chair. She saw the first hominins lamenting to the night sky when their brains were large enough to realize the magnitude of their existence.
She saw the inside of an atom, and by Rao, she couldn’t stop crying.
Tinya found herself in a vast, pulsating energy field. As it compressed and phased, her body involuntarily phased with it. Then the field shifted, harmoniously, and she witnessed the birth of matter from an incredible ancient dance. “Wow,” the girl whispered. The delicate infraradiance was stunning, and she had to turn her eyes away for a moment. When she looked back, she saw Brin standing there, smiling his gentle smile.
But you cannot kiss an idea.
Phantom Girl woke up and found herself in Timber Wolf’s arms. He was looking right at her, with a concerned expression on his face. She gave him a small smile. He was always making sure she was ok. She put a hand on his cheek and put her forehead on his, noses touching, and looked straight into his amber eyes.
You are the Sun and moon to me. I’ll never get over you. You’ll never get over me.
Tinya pressed her lips against his. It was a chaste kiss, lasting only a few moments. It was one of the bravest things she had done, and yet, it felt almost natural.
